Dorothy Masarik has been a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sister of Jackson County for 6 years (since April, 2005). She has been matched in the Bigs in Schools Program with four Little Sisters who have found her to be a consistent and caring presence in their lives.
Her current Little Sister, Brittany, is in the 5th grade in Ms. Norman’s class at Bennett Elementary. She and Dorothy have been matched since February, 2010. During part of the duration of their match, Dorothy was matched with Brittany and her good friend, Alyssa, who was in the same class. Alyssa moved to another school district after the New Year, 2011. Brittany and Dorothy both miss their friend, Alyssa, very much.
During their weekly match meetings, Dorothy and Brittany enjoy reading together and using the FunThinkers learning activities provided by BBBSJC for match activities at Bennett Elementary. Last year they read High School Musical: Senior Year 3 and a book from the American Girl series about Kaya, a Native American girl. Brittany said that she was interested in reading about Kaya because her great grandfather was Native American. Together Brittany and Dorothy learned about another culture and their language from the perspective of a young girl Brittany’s age. This year, Brittany and Dorothy have focused on discussions about friendship and how to make good decisions.
Dorothy has a quiet strength, gained, she has told me, through the difficulties that she has experienced in her personal life. Last year she encountered some barriers to her participation in the BBBSJC program at Bennett School. She had some car problems and some health difficulties that kept her home for several weeks, but her commitment to her Little Sisters was so strong that she persevered through these obstacles and was able to return to mentoring more determined than ever to provide her Littles with the benefit of her life lessons.
